TunisiaHarlem Shake Revolt

The Education Ministry wanted to punish students who filmed themselves doing the wild and shaky dance performance in a public high school. It backfired.

(Video by Iheb Ezzair) What began as an innocent prank, turned into another round of the culture war opposing Tunisia’s Islamists and the rest of society

Last Saturday, students in the Père Blanc high school in Menzah filmed themselves doing a Harlem Shake dance during a school party. After the video became viral, the Education Minister demanded an investigation on the use of school grounds for “immoral behavior.” Interestingly, one of the students seen in the video is the son of an influential Ennahda ruling party MP.

Tunisians reacted by posting even more videos of the viral dance, and a Facebook group was created to organize a mass Harlem Shake dance in front of the Education Ministry on March 1st.
